THE NEXT STEP

The typical beginner stage of lessons ends with the student confidently water starting, kiting in a straight line, and staying up wind in good conditions. Typically, students will take a break from lessons and spend some time enjoying these new skills, but at some point, this may no longer be enough. Students may watch other kiters get big air, whip a quick back roll, or even surf the waves and this is when it’s time for the intermediate stage of lessons.

FREESTYLE

Most students start with basic freestyle moves because they already have the familiarity with twin-tip boards, and basic freestyle moves are easier to build upon a straight upwind riding repertoire. Whether you want to nail a transition, chop hop, sent jumps, or master toe-side transitions and riding – lessons are a great way to quickly cut ahead on the learning curve and get to the basics of each move. Believe it or not, every kitesurfing move is based on a hidden key. You can learn the key the hard way, with weeks of trial and error, or we can hand you the key and guide you through the application of the key, backed with video feedback to help you through the learning process.

Miscellaneous freestyle moves:

TRANSITION – Heading in one direction, the rider slows down and begins traveling on the opposite tack without falling in the water and having to re-water-start.
CHOP HOPPING – A kiter will head out, and begin to use small waves as ramps to get a little bit of air, without the use of the kite.
SENT JUMPS – A kiter will use the kite to create lift, sending the rider into the air, and landing softly.
HANDLEPASSES – The kiter is unhooked from the kite, holding the kites power only with his arm, and rotates his body, passing the control bar behind his back switching from one hand to another.

WAVERIDING

Kiting makes wave riding much easier than surfing. Kites help you pull into waves, making your wave count soar through the roof, which in turn allows riders to get better faster. Wave riding varies from place to place, our location routinely gets side-on wind conditions, and we have the most consistent wind pattern on the west coast. Wave riding lessons cover the safety issues of using kites around the waves and covers board skills and kite placement skills. Wave riding is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the sport and our instructors are some of the most talented wave riders on the west coast.
